Procedural Textures

While researching for my web-game MarbleRunner i found a great method to produce textures on the fly via scripting.

It is based on an old demoscene effect called “Plasma” merged with 2d-Perlin Noise generation. The cool thing about this is that i can produce and animate textures during runtime now – things like dirt, dusk, clouds, wood etc…
I also build a small editor for this (to play around with the variables) – http://www.marcenciel.de/Webgames/Plasma.html

The benefits of procedural generated textures are great : more variations and way less (nearly zero) data storage – perfect for web-games.

I will add some screenshots later here…
